AN IMPROMPTU BRUNCH – Score: 7.5/10
While rummaging through my collection of over six thousand bottles, I came across this unusually shaped bottle from the Balvenie distillery—a format more common in the world of cognac than in that of Scotch whisky.
A Founder’s Reserve from the 1980s, aged ten years, piqued my curiosity.
The tasting evoked memories of brunch at the Victoria Hotel in Interlaken, for those familiar with the place. One can enjoy breakfast while watching paragliders land on the vast lawn bordering the entrance to the palace.
Caramel and honey notes intertwine with citrus aromas, reminiscent of pink grapefruit. Naturally, a faint hint of sulfur accompanies this epicurean journey, as was customary with whiskies from this era.
The finish lingers on black tea, concluding an exceptionally pleasant tasting experience.
