A GERMAN DELICACY – Score: 7/10
The Glentauchers distillery is relatively new to the whisky market, having been established in 1898 by James Buchanan, whose famous blend remains popular in South America. Glentauchers was never really intended for the single malt market, instead playing a significant role in the composition of blends like Black & White and, more recently, Ballantine’s.
With the exponential rise in the prices of casks from single malt distilleries, independent bottlers have increasingly turned to so-called “secondary” distilleries like Glentauchers.
This has sometimes resulted in hidden gems or, at the very least, interesting whiskies.
Such is the case with this Glentauchers aged in sherry casks by the Scottish bottler Blackadder.
It’s a remarkable success, with warm flavors of chocolate and cherry and a syrupy texture that vaguely recalls Mon Chéri (but much better). The finish is slightly peppery with hints of meat broth.
It’s well-balanced, quite pleasant, and indulgent.
