Laphroaig Cairdeas 2017

INTOXICATING BREAKFAST – Score: 9/10

Laphroaig has become highly productive in recent years by releasing more and more collateral versions to its core range, which seems to be slowly disappearing. Indeed, it is increasingly rare to find 15 and 18-year-olds; however, the Cairdeas series is regularly produced each year, delivering a surprise in terms of finish every time.

This year, 2017 saw the release of a Cairdeas aged in Maker’s Mark Bourbon barrels and then finished in a Quarter Cask aimed at enhancing the flavors.

It can be said that the result is more than successful with an enormous gustatory power plunging us into a hearty and intoxicating breakfast. The attack is buttery and toasted like a good grilled brioche that we would not have missed the salt on. The finish, with its vanilla and woody notes, brings us back to the fundamentals of Laphroaig with its characteristic grassy peat.

A great whisky and a nice vintage for this Cairdeas specially concocted for the Feis Ile 2017.
