Longmorn 1972 34 years

TEA TIME – 8/10

I realize that the only two Longmorn whiskies I have had the chance to taste were at the Golden Promise in Paris. Odd for a distillery that isn’t quite so confidential.

Longmorn’s reputation is indeed fine, yet often not well-known to the general public. Few people know that Longmorn is the older sister of Benriach. Three years its senior, it has nonetheless lost the renown of its illustrious sibling, which, since Billy Walker’s tenure, has overshadowed this legendary mid-20th-century distillery known for producing quintessential Speyside malts.

Let us now turn our attention to this 1972 bottling, released thirty-four years later by Gordon & MacPhail at a 45% dilution.

Though the label does not specify, we can, with little risk of error, surmise that it matured in a sherry cask. Indeed, the tasting notes confirm it with that distinctive sweetness reminiscent of orange marmalade and candied red fruits.

The finish extends into wood and black tea. A whisky full of nobility and balance, marking a refined version.
