A PEAT BOG UNDER BORDEAUX – Score: 8/10
My relationship with Octomore is something of a love-hate affair. For reasons I can’t quite explain, I’ve always felt that too much peat kills the peat. As a result, I don’t have any particular affinity for Octomore at first glance.
And yet, when I look back at my tasting notes, Octomore is far from being the lowest-rated brand in my collection.
So what explains this irrational aversion? I have no idea.
Tonight, the subject of scrutiny is the Comus 4.2, aged in Sauternes casks. Once again, I find myself pleasantly surprised by the quality of this product. The texture is indulgent, revealing a surprising complexity with notes of wholegrain bread and fresh grapes. The wine-like character is apparent, accompanied by hints of ginger. The peat, as expected, is intense but harmoniously integrates with the supporting aromas.
A well-crafted Octomore, truly worthy of its reputation.
