A VINTAGE TO REMEMBER – Score: 9/10
Each year, Springbank delights whisky enthusiasts with the release of its 21-year-old expression—a dram that’s become something of a ritual in the whisky world. But unlike many age-statement whiskies that maintain a fixed formula, Springbank boldly changes the cask composition with every vintage, making each bottling a unique experience unto itself. That sense of annual reinvention is part of what makes this distillery so beloved among connoisseurs: you never quite know what to expect, yet the quality is almost always assured.
For the 2024 edition, the distillery has opted for a bold and unconventional maturation profile. The blend is composed of 70% rum casks, imparting tropical sweetness and a touch of funk, balanced by 30% bourbon casks, which bring classic vanilla, caramel, and soft spice notes. This is not your typical sherry-heavy Springbank, and that in itself already sets the stage for something distinct.
From the first sip, it’s clear this is a standout. The mouthfeel is remarkably lush and creamy, almost oily, coating the palate with an elegance that speaks to its age and careful blending. The flavor opens on an explosion of exotic fruits—with ripe mango taking the lead—followed by hints of guava and grilled pineapple. These fruity notes don’t feel artificial or overly sweet; they’re fresh, juicy, and vibrant, dancing on the tongue.
As with many Springbanks, there’s a wisp of peat smoke, but it’s subtle and well-integrated—more like a whisper than a roar. It fades quickly, allowing the complexity of the cask influence to fully emerge. Notes of noble oak, peppermint, and even a touch of eucalyptus add depth and contrast, while a faint chalky or powdery texture lends a tactile character that keeps things interesting. There’s a fine balance here between richness and freshness, sweetness and structure.
The finish is long, clean, and satisfying—layered with soft spices, dried herbs, and lingering fruit. It leaves behind the impression of a whisky that is both mature and alive, shaped by time but far from tired.
All in all, this year’s 21-year-old is a masterful success. It showcases Springbank’s continued commitment to innovation without sacrificing the house character that fans have come to cherish. It may not be the most powerful or intense whisky in their lineup, but in terms of elegance, texture, and aromatic complexity, it hits all the right notes.
This is truly a vintage of choice—one that collectors will value, but more importantly, one that deserves to be opened, savored, and remembered.
