For the 2024 edition, the distillery has opted for a bold and unconventional maturation profile. The blend is composed of 70% rum casks, imparting tropical sweetness and a touch of funk, balanced by 30% bourbon casks, which bring classic vanilla, caramel, and soft spice notes. This is not your typical sherry-heavy Springbank, and that in itself already sets the stage for something distinct.
From the first sip, it’s clear this is a standout. The mouthfeel is remarkably lush and creamy, almost oily, coating the palate with an elegance that speaks to its age and careful blending. The flavor opens on an explosion of exotic fruits—with ripe mango taking the lead—followed by hints of guava and grilled pineapple. The finish is long, clean, and satisfying—layered with soft spices, dried herbs, and lingering fruit. It leaves behind the impression of a whisky that is both mature and alive, shaped by time but far from tired.
All in all, this year’s 21-year-old is a masterful success. It showcases Springbank’s continued commitment to innovation without sacrificing the house character that fans have come to cherish. It may not be the most powerful or intense whisky in their lineup, but in terms of elegance, texture, and aromatic complexity, it hits all the right notes.
