DILUTED GRAIN JUICE – 4/10
It is sometimes intriguing to revisit the whiskies of yesteryear. The legend claims that “things were better back then.” So tonight, I have the opportunity to test this adage by sampling a whisky still produced today, though this particular bottling hails from the 1980s.
The whisky I’ve chosen is an Auchentoshan Select. As an entry-level offering from the distillery located near Glasgow, this whisky remains a best-seller, largely due to its modest price (around 20 euros).
Auchentoshan is known for its dedication to triple distillation, which is evident in the light, airy, and linear profile of its whiskies.
This venerable beverage is no exception, distinguished by its (overly) pronounced lightness, revealing a few sweetened notes of grain and dried fruit.
A whisky, to say the least, sorely lacking in character… much like its current successor, in fact.
