Glenallachie 10 years CS #9

TOO MUCH EMBRACING, POORLY HELD – Score: 7/10

There have already been twelve editions of GlenAllachie’s 10-year-old cask strength series — a flagship range from the distillery that has built a solid reputation among whisky enthusiasts. Notably, Batch 4 was once named Whisky of the Year, earning widespread acclaim and cementing the status of this small-batch release as a must-watch event.

Now, it is Batch 9’s turn to face the glass. It remains faithful to the now-classic maturation trilogy that helped define the series: American virgin oak, sherry casks, and Rioja red wine barrels — a blend of bold influences aimed at achieving both richness and complexity.

From the first nosing, one is struck by the depth and intensity of the profile. Notes of ripe grape and red wine are at the forefront, as expected from the Rioja influence, followed by warm aromas of dried fruit and soft spices. On the palate, the wine and sherry casks continue to dominate, offering layers of stewed berries, dark plum, and even a hint of balsamic tang. Then come the familiar GlenAllachie signatures: dark chocolate, licorice, and a long, assertive finish marked by toasted oak and a flash of fresh mint.

Despite this aromatic opulence, the overall balance feels somewhat lacking. The elements seem to compete rather than harmonize, resulting in a dram that feels just a touch overdone, as if the cask influence wasn’t quite tamed. There is intensity, yes — but not enough control.

In the end, while Batch 9 will surely please those seeking a bold, flavor-forward whisky, it lacks the coherence and finesse of previous editions. For me, Batch 5 still stands out as the most refined and successful expression in the series — richer, but also more disciplined in its delivery.
