Aberfeldy est une distillerie qui ne m’a jamais vraiment attirée, tout du moins ses embouteillages officiels. D’ailleurs vous aurez remarqué que les anciennes bouteilles d’Aberfeldy 12 ans ressemblaient étrangement aux bouteilles du blend Dewar’s.
C’est normal car Aberfeldy est en fait l’ingrédient principal de ce célèbre blend.
Mais aujourd’hui nous aurons donc, par l’entremise d’un membre du club The Highlander’s de Bruxelles, le plaisir de découvrir un Aberfeldy embouteillé par Ian MacLeod et sa série Chieftain’s.
Un Aberfeldy de quatorze ans d’âge vieilli en fût de Porto, lui conférant une couleur particulière ressemblant à un vin rosé.
Au palais, cela ressemble plus à un finish de Marsala qu’à un fût de Porto tant le côté bonbon se distingue nettement. La suite nous maintient dans la confiserie avec des pointes de caramel mou puis tend vers une note plus vineuse et poivrée.
La finale tourne à l’amertume sur le bois humide.
Un whisky de prime abord plutôt féminin tournant brutalement vers une finale brutalement masculine, c’est bien dans l’air du temps de notre époque inclusive.

Aberfeldy is a distillery that never really attracted me, at least not its official bottlings. You may have noticed that the old bottles of Aberfeldy 12 years looked strikingly similar to Dewar’s blend bottles.
That’s normal because Aberfeldy is actually the main ingredient in this famous blend.
But today, through the agency of a member of the Highlander’s club in Brussels, we will have the pleasure of discovering an Aberfeldy bottled by Ian MacLeod and his Chieftain’s series.
An Aberfeldy fourteen years old, aged in a Port barrel, giving it a particular color resembling a rosé wine.
On the palate, it resembles more of a Marsala finish than a Port barrel as the candy side stands out clearly. The rest of the experience keeps us in confectionery with soft caramel peaks and then moves towards a more vinous and peppery note.
The finish turns bitter on the wet wood.
A prime whisky that is rather feminine, turning suddenly to a brutally masculine finish, it is in line with the inclusive spirit of our times.
