DU MASSEPAIN A LA POMME – Score: 9/10

Il y a des whisky comme ça, vous les voyez tous les jours et vous hésitez à les ouvrir. Vous vous dîtes qu’il vaudrait mieux les vendre plutôt que de les boire. Vous regardez la bouteille et à chaque fois, quelque chose vous retient de l’ouvrir.

Et bien, c’était ce qu’il se produisait avec ce BenRiach là. Jusqu’au jour où j’acquis un petit fût et que je me laisse tenter par un vieillissement maison. Vu que j’avais deux bouteilles de ce BenRiach, je me suis dit, allez, on va tenter avec celui-là. J’ai donc ouvert mes deux bouteilles d’un coup et j’ai versé le contenu dans le fût…. pour constater que le fût n’était plus étanche et que du liquide s’en échappait par le bas. Catastrophe ! En urgence, j’ai récupéré mon BenRiach et réembouteillé le tout (avec une perte de quelques centilitres à la clef).

Néanmoins, cela m’a permis de goûter ce BenRiach que je n’osais pas ouvrir et quelle surprise : un excellent whisky se cachait dans ces bouteilles. Un palais tout doux, démarrant sur la pomme verte, les fruits du verger, tournant vers la glace au fraise sertie de feuilles de menthe et un final très massepain.

Un vrai dessert fruité que je recommande vivement. Et dire que j’ai failli le ruiner dans un fût qui aurait pu dénaturer ce splendide malt.

MARZIPAN WITH APPLE – Score: 9/10

Sometimes, there are whiskies, you see them every day and you hesitate to taste them. You think it would be better to sell them rather than drink them. You look at the bottle and each time something is holding you back from opening it.

Well, that was what was happening with that BenRiach. Until the day I bought a small barrel and let myself be tempted by house aging. Since I had two bottles of this BenRiach, I was about to give it a try. So I opened my two bottles at once and poured the content into the cask…. to find out that the barrel was no longer airtight and that liquid was escaping from the bottom. Catastrophe! In an emergency, I recovered my BenRiach and bottled it again (with a loss of a few centiliters).

Nevertheless, it allowed me to taste this BenRiach which I did not dare to open and what a surprise: an excellent whisky was hidden in these bottles. A very soft palate, starting with green apple, orchard fruits, turning to strawberry ice cream set with mint leaves and a very marzipan finish.

A real fruity dessert that I highly recommend. And to think that I almost ruined it in a cask that could have distorted this splendid malt….
