Nikka – Red

PIZZA WITH ANCHOVIES – Score: 5.5/10

About a decade ago, Nikka treated us to a trilogy of Pure Malt, a blend from their two distilleries (Yoichi and Miyagikyo).

Nikka Red is predominantly a Miyagikyo blend, allowing us to savor a lightly peated whisky.

Like many Japanese productions, this whisky is very subtle and light, which might be a drawback for those who prefer bold flavors (count me among them).

The whisky has a slight smokiness, introducing surprising notes of grilled anchovies and wood reminiscent of a pizza oven.

Considering the price, it’s a perfectly decent everyday whisky. With a release price around €35, we were not yet in the realm of speculative madness and could enjoy a decent whisky without breaking the bank.
