Auchentoshan 1990 23 ans – cask #6850

english version below

A BITTER STRAW JUICE – Score: 5/10

Once upon a time, I had purchased a number of samples from the whiskybase merchant site including this Auchentoshan from Archives (which is also whiskybase production).

Auchentoshan is arguably the largest (currently) Lowlands distillery and the one with the most sales on the market.

Traditionally, the Lowlands distilleries practice triple distillation like their Irish cousins, which often produces a whisky that is often more watery, softer, more concentrated in floral aromas and, in fact, less aggressive in the mouth.

Well, for this version bottled by the famous Dutch firm, we are far from the tradition.

This malt is the opposite of what you would expect from a Lowland. Aggressive, powerful, very malty. Some notes of iodine also (surprisingly), citrus (bitter orange) then a finish on coffee (coffee grounds). A lot of bitterness in this whisky which makes it unpleasant.

A strange combination, an atypical whisky and clearly outside the brand’s standard.
