Ici, nous avons une version vieillie en fût de bourbon puis placée en fût de Tawny Porto pour la finission.

L’apport du Porto est plutôt désagréable sur cette version de 17 ans. Cela lui apporte une grosse présence d’épice qui étouffe toute la subtilité du whisky malté. La douceur acquise par le passage en fût de bourbon est totalement annihilée, ce qui rend ce whisky agressif, trop puissant, totalement déséquilibré.

Il est à noté que, de tout les finish, celui en fût de porto semble être le plus délicat. Peu de distillateurs trouvent le bon équilibre. Néanmoins, certains y parviennent et j’en parlerai dans des publications futures.

Here, we have a version aged in bourbon casks then placed in Tawny Porto casks for the finish.

The contribution of Port is rather unpleasant on this 17 year old version. This gives it a strong presence of spice that stifles all the subtlety of malted whisky. The sweetness acquired by the filling in bourbon casks is totally annihilated, which makes this whisky harsh, too powerful, totally unbalanced.

It should be noted that, of all the finishes, the one in port barrels seems to be the most complex. Few distillers find the right balance. Nonetheless, some do and I will discuss this in future publications.
