Imperial est le parfait exemple de ce que Macchiavel décrivait comme les défauts d’un Prince – manquer de Fortuna. En effet, cette distillerie a été de multiples fois fermée puis réouverte mais systématiquement au mauvais moment.
Lorsque le marché du whisky s’effondrait, Impérial rouvrait puis se fermait au moment où le marché se relancait.
Le boom actuel du whisky ne pourra plus rien pour cette distillerie dont les bâtiments ont été rasé en 2013 pour faire place à une nouvelle distillerie nommée Dalmunach et fournissant massivement ces 10 millions de litres d’alcool au blender Chivas Regal.
Dès lors, il ne nous reste plus que quelques bouteilles pour connaître les saveurs de ce qu’Imperial savait produire en son temps.
Ici, un Imperial de 1977 semblant être vieilli en fût de bourbon par l’embouteilleur inconnu The Vintage Malt Whisky.
La texture est légèrement huileuse et offre une délicate chaleur au palais alors que les saveurs florales et fruitières (pêches blanches) nous surprennent positivement. La suite est toute aussi agréable avec des notes de vanille et d’une surprenante saveur provençale de thym frais. Une pointe de gingembre se percevra en finale.
Un excellent whisky à découvrir.

Imperial is a perfect example of what Machiavelli described as the flaws of a Prince – lacking Fortuna. Indeed, this distillery has been closed and reopened multiple times but always at the wrong time.
When the whisky market was collapsing, Imperial would reopen and then close again just as the market was recovering.
The current whisky boom cannot do anything for this distillery, whose buildings were demolished in 2013 to make way for a new distillery named Dalmunach, which supplies 10 million liters of alcohol to the Chivas Regal blender.
Therefore, we only have a few bottles left to experience the flavors that Imperial was able to produce in its time.
Here, an Imperial from 1977, which appears to have been aged in a bourbon cask by the unknown bottler The Vintage Malt Whisky.
The texture is slightly oily and offers a delicate warmth on the palate, while the floral and fruity flavors (white peaches) pleasantly surprise us. The rest is equally pleasant, with notes of vanilla and a surprising Provençal flavor of fresh thyme. A hint of ginger can be perceived on the finish.
An excellent whisky to discover.
