PARAFFINE FUMÉE – Score: 6,5/10
Kilchoman est un OVNI dans le petit monde (de moins en moins petit) des distilleries écossaises. Qui plus est, sur la mythique île d’Islay où se trouve des légendes telles que Ardbeg, Bowmore, Laphroaig ou encore l’ancienne Port Ellen.
Alors pour être capable de se faire un nom sur cette île de géants, il faut en avoir du caractère. Et Kilchoman manque peut-être de beaucoup de choses, mais pas de caractère.
Depuis 2005 (année de son ouverture), Kilchoman produit du whisky de qualité. Avec cette capacité rare, marque des grands, d’affirmer sa personnalité à travers son inimitable goût.
En effet, Kilchoman est au whisky ce qu’un Hendrix, un Santana ou un Clapton est à la guitare : reconnaissable !
Aujourd’hui, je vous donne la note de dégustation du millésime 2006 de Kilchoman. Ce n’est pas la première que je goûte mais vu que je l’ai ouverte aujourd’hui, c’est en primeur que je vous la partage.
Tous les deux ans, depuis 2011, Kilchoman nous livre son millésime (dont le 2006 est le premier). Cette première version est mix d’un vieillissement de 5 ans en fût de chêne pour 80% et de 20% d’un vieillissement en fût de bourbon.
Au nez, on reconnait le style Kilchoman où la fumée vous envahit les naseaux, plein pot. Là, on sait déjà qu’on va prendre du plaisir (surtout si on aime le fumé). Malheureusement, le palais ne suit pas. Alors, oui, la fumée on l’a. On l’a même beaucoup trop. Elle surplombe l’ensemble. En prenant, le temps, on décèle des notes de vanille, un goût moins agréable de paraffine et une final cendrée.
Ce n’est clairement pas le meilleur de Kilchoman et il fallait s’en douter car cette version utilise les premiers fûts produits par la distillerie donc pas forcément les meilleurs.
Mais il reste néanmoins un whisky agréable pour son arôme fumé, cela pourrait être pire.

So to be able to make a name for yourself on this island of giants, you have to have character. And Kilchoman may be lacking in a lot of things, but not in character.
Since 2005 (year of its opening), Kilchoman has produced quality whisky. With this rare ability, a mark of greats, to assert their personality through their inimitable taste.
Indeed, Kilchoman is to whisky what a Hendrix, a Santana or a Clapton is to the guitar: recognizable!
Today, I give you the tasting note for the 2006 vintage of Kilchoman. It’s not the first that I’ve tasted, but since I opened it today, I’ll share it with you first.
Every two years, since 2011, Kilchoman delivers us its vintage (of which 2006 is the first). This first version is a mix of 5 years aging in oak barrels for 80% and 20% aging in bourbon barrels.
On the nose, we recognize the Kilchoman style where the smoke invades your nostrils, full pot. There, we already know that we are going to have fun (especially if we like smoke). Unfortunately, the palate does not follow suit. So, yeah, we got the smoke. We even have it too much. It overlooks the whole. By taking time, we detect notes of vanilla, a less pleasant taste of paraffin and an ashy finish.
This is clearly not the best of Kilchoman and it was to be suspected as this version uses the first barrels produced by the distillery so not necessarily the best.
But it remains nevertheless a pleasant whisky for its smoky aroma, it could be worse
