Springbank 1966 Local Barley… Un mythe, une légende, voire une licorne tellement cette pépite est rare et recherchée.

C’est dans un grand restaurant de la capitale belge que j’ai le plaisir de découvrir ce malt caché entre un glenfiddich et un J&B.

Considéré comme l’un des top 500 meilleurs whisky du monde, c’est donc avec une certaine impatience que j’attends qu’on me le serve, les yeux déjà embués de plaisir et de joie.

Sa robe est semblable à un bon vieux Château d’Yqem, un nez extrêmement plaisant, gourmand, pleins de fruits mûrs (mangue, papaye, melon,…).

Au palais, la texture est somptueuse, d’une douceur et onctuosité semblable aux meilleurs cognacs. La vanille saute aux papilles suivies par un capuccino intense et un poivre noir puissant.

La finale sera sur le chocolat noir, le bois de chêne noble et quelques pointes de cardamone.

Je sais que cette note pourra susciter de l’indignation mais le plaisir ressenti ne fût pas à la hauteur des attentes et mon palais, malgré toute la volonté du monde, n’aura pas réussi à s’accommoder de l’amertume et du déséquilibre éthylique de ce Springbank.

Néanmoins, cela reste un whisky bien fait.

A FALLING KING – 8.5/10

Springbank 1966 Local Barley… A myth, a legend, even a unicorn so rare and sought after is this nugget.

It is in one of the best gastro restaurant in the Belgian capital that I have the pleasure of discovering this malt hidden between a glenfiddich and a J&B.

Considered as one of the top 500 best whisky in the world, it’s with some impatience that I wait to be served, my eyes already clouded with pleasure and joy.

Its color is similar to a good old Château d´Yqem, an extremely pleasant nose, delicious, full of ripe fruits (mango, papaya, melon,…).

On the palate, the texture is sumptuous, with a smoothness similar to the best brandies. Vanilla jumps on the taste buds followed by intense cappuccino and powerful black pepper.

The finish will be on dark chocolate, noble oak wood and some cardamom hints.

I know that this note could arouse indignation but the pleasure felt was not up to the expectations and, despite all the willingness of the world, my palate will not have managed to put up with the bitterness and the imbalance ethyl of this Springbank.

Nevertheless, it remains a well made whisky.
