UN CAOL ILA NORMAND – Score: 8,5/10
C’était un soir d’hiver comme celui-ci, sauf que nous étions autorisés à sortir et boire des verres dans des bars. Sauf qu’il y avait plein de neige partout. J’étais dans un de mes bars préférés en Suisse, au Gstaad Palace, comme son nom l’indique, dans la paisible et bucolique station de Gstaad.
Après une excellente fondue savoyarde (dîtes fondue tout court en Suisse), je pris le temps de savourer ma digestion au bar où quelques petites pépites se cachaient aux regards des impétrants.
Mon oeil avisé repéra rapidement ce Caol Ila de chez Gordon & MacPhail’s – version 1988 – vieillie en fût de Calvados.
C’est une curiosité pour moi, n’ayant encore jamais expérimenté ce genre de finish et je n’en serai pas déçu. On retrouve une tourbe moyenne, plutôt florale, se mêlant avec grâce à la pomme du calvados. Un mariage réussi, sans aucun doute, très peu d’amertume, une finale mi-vanille, mi-tabac qui laisse une agréable impression en bouche.
On regrettera la transition un poil trop rapide et une finale plutôt courte.
Mais ne pinaillons pas, c’est une belle cuvée.
A CAOL ILA OUT OF NORMANDY – Score: 8.5 / 10
It was a winter night like this is, except we were allowed to go out and have drinks in bars. Except there was plenty of snow everywhere. I was in one of my favorite bars in Switzerland, at the Gstaad Palace, as the name suggests, in the peaceful and bucolic resort of Gstaad.
After an excellent Savoyard fondue (simply called fondue in Switzerland), I took the time to savor my digestion at the bar where a few small nuggets were hiding from the eyes of those applicants.
My discerning eye quickly spotted this Caol Ila from Gordon & MacPhail’s – 1988 version – aged in Calvados casks.
It’s a curiosity to me, having never experienced this kind of finish before and it did surely not disappointed me. We find a medium peat, rather floral, blending gracefully with the apple of Calvados. A successful marriage, without a doubt, very little bitterness, a half-vanilla, half-tobacco finish that leaves a pleasant impression in the mouth.
We regret the transition a bit too fast and a rather short finish.
But let’s not nitpick, this is a great vintage.
