Grosse soirée de dégustation au club “The Friends of Malt” à Kraainem où quelques sérieuses bouteilles seront ouvertes.
On débute la série de 5 bouteilles par ce Balvenie 25 ans vieilli en fût de bourbon puis fini en fût de sherry.
Ce Balvenie est extrêmement agréable en bouche, du moins pour les premiers instants : une texture chaude et huileuse, quelques notes de vanille bourbon et de coco, de crème anglaise et de miel.
Puis patatra, le caramel prend le dessus avec le chêne qui envahit le palais désagréablement, nous laissant avec une finale (plutôt longue) mentholée et amère.
Alors oui, ce whisky est techniquement bien fait. Une texture parfaite, une finale prolongée, une variété de saveur mais on regrettera un défaut d’équilibre au niveau éthylique et une amertume bien trop prononcée.
Les amateurs du genre seront sans doute ravi.

Huge tasting evening at “The Friends of Malt” club in Kraainem where some serious bottles will be opened.
We begin the series of 5 bottles with this 25-year-old Balvenie aged in bourbon casks and then finished in sherry casks.
This Balvenie is extremely pleasant on the palate, at least for the first few moments: a warm and oily texture, some notes of bourbon vanilla and coconut, custard and honey.
Alas, the caramel takes over with the oak which invades the palate unpleasantly, leaving us with a (rather long) minty and bitter finish.
So yes, this whisky is technically well made. A perfect texture, a prolonged finish, a variety of flavors, but we regret a lack of ethyl balance and too much bitterness.
Fans of the style will no doubt be delighted.
