UN MACHIR BAY AVANT L’HEURE – Score: 7/10
Après une longue série de sherry butt, sans transition je passe sur un vieillissement en fût de bourbon pour ce Caol Ila 2004 de chez Gordon & MacPhail’s.
Avec Caol Ila, on ne sait pas toujours à quoi s’attendre, c’est sans doute la distillerie de Islay la plus polyvalente en terme de saveur.
C’est donc avec une certaine curiosité que je m’attaque à cette version de 7 ans d’âge réduite à 40%.
Bon, au nez, directement, nous savons que la tourbe est bien présente. La vanille aussi d’ailleurs.
Au palais, une belle tourbe industrielle nous prend, sans être écoeurante, enrobée d’une légère vanille ce qui rend l’équilibre nez-bouche consistant. Agréable, pas d’amertume mais limité. La réduction à 40% était sans doute de bon aloi car brut de fût, je pense que cette version aurait été trop puissante.
Etrangement, cela ressemble à s’y méprendre à un Kilchoman Machir Bay : même tourbe fumée, même légère présence vanillée. La finale n’est pas exceptionnelle et nous en restons là coté saveur.
Whisky sympathique mais sans extravagance.
A MACHIR BAY BEFORE TIME – Score: 7/10
After a long series of sherry butt, without transition I move on to aging in bourbon casks for this 2004 Caol Ila from Gordon & MacPhail’s.
With Caol Ila, you don’t always know what to expect, this is arguably the most versatile distillery in Islay when it comes to flavor.
So it is with some curiosity that I tackle this version of 7 years old reduced to 40%.
Well, on the nose, straight away, we know that the peat is present. Vanilla, too.
On the palate, a nice industrial peat takes hold of us, without being cloying, coated with a light vanilla which gives a consistent nose-mouth balance. Pleasant, no bitterness but limited. The reduction to 40% was probably good because cask raw, I think this version would have been too powerful.
Strangely, it seems like a Kilchoman Machir Bay: same smoky peat, same slight vanilla presence. The final is not exceptional and we will stay there on the flavor side.
Nice whisky but without any extravagance.
