Un soir de pluie, l’envie est à la tourbe, je ne sais pourquoi mais cette association est gravée en moi. J’ai du mal à boire un whisky tourbé lorsque le soleil brille.
Alors je me sers ce Caol Ila de 9 ans d’âge de Gordon & MacPhail’s et sa série “Spirit of Scotland” réduit, comme à leur habitude, à 46%
La tourbe, comme souvent chez Caol Ila, est subtile, nous sommes loins des monstres de tourbes que sont les Octomore, les Kilchoman ou autres Lagavulin.
Ici, nous sommes dans la légèreté et le finish en fût de bourbon rajoute à cette impression de transparence. Le côté floral, vanillé est prononcé, il contrebalance la tourbe mais tourne radicalement boisé après quelques minutes pour finir sur des notes d’amertumes fort prononcées et peu agréable.
Dommage, le début était doux comme une fleure mâtinée de rosée mais se termine tel une branche imbibée de pluie.

The peat, as often with Caol Ila, is subtle, we are far from the peat monsters that are the Octomore, the Kilchoman or other Lagavulins.
Here, we are in the light and the finish in bourbon casks adds to this impression of transparency. The floral, vanilla side is pronounced, it counterbalances the peat but turns radically woody after a few minutes to finish with very pronounced and unpleasant notes of bitterness.
Too bad, the beginning was sweet like a flower mixed with dew but ends like a branch soaked with rain.
